On Sunday, Bulgarians participated in a general election—the fifth in two years—in the hope of putting an end to political unrest and assisting in the resolution of economic difficulties brought on by the raging war in Ukraine.
The polling places opened at 7 a.m. After polls close at 8 p.m. (1700 GMT), the preliminary results of the exit poll are anticipated on Monday.
Due to voters' apathy and disillusionment with politicians, who have repeatedly failed to form a viable government coalition, turnout is expected to be low.
Furthermore, schools that are serving as voting places for Sunday's election came under a wave of bomb threats in the final days before the election.
Cybersecurity experts attributed the threats to hacker groups that were carrying out hybrid attacks with a probable Russian connection that were intended to sow fear and lower voter turnout. Since many Bulgarians have historically supported Russia, the most impoverished EU member state has been fruitful ground for aggressive Kremlin propaganda.
